Tips for Working through the Order of Worship

We encourage that someone takes the lead in prompting through the prayers, reading, and discussion questions below, as many sections will have a “leader” and a response by “everyone.” Accordingly, each participant is encouraged to follow along on their own device (or displaying this on a screen everyone can see). *Underlined Text is meant to be read together, corporately.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

CALL TO WORSHIP

Based on Psalm 98:1-6:
Leader: Sing a new song to the Lord, who has worked wonders, whose right hand and holy arm have brought salvation.

Everyone: The Lord has made known salvation; has shown justice to the nations; has remembered truth and love for the house of Israel.

Leader: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Everyone: Shout to the Lord, all the earth, sing out your joy.

Leader: Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music.

Everyone: With trumpets and the sound of the horn acclaim the King, the Lord.

RESPONSIVE READING
This excerpt comes from from the Heidelberg Catechism (learn more here and here), written in 1563 with a particular focus on how the doctrines of the Christian faith provide comfort & hope to believers.

Lord’s Day 16 Q & A 53:

Leader: What further benefit do we receive from Christ’s sacrifice and death on the cross?

Everyone: By Christ’s power our old selves are crucified, put to death, and buried with him, so that the evil desires of the flesh may no longer rule us, but that instead we may offer ourselves as a sacrifice of gratitude to him.

SCRIPTURE READING
Colossians 2:11-15
*Note: Scripture reading also available in the sermon video

11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord
Everyone: Thanks be to God!

SERMON
"Was Crucified, Died, and Was Buried" (Colossians 2:11-15)
*We encourage you to corporately read along with The Apostles’ Creed in the video

DISCUSSION & PRAYER

Based on Colossians 2:11-15 & Andrew’s sermon, discuss the following questions:

  1. Why is our union with Christ so important?

  2. How does the cross of Christ deal completely with our sin, guilt & shame?

  3. Does your life reflect this complete salvation, forgiveness, and victory? Where might you be called to greater faith in the finished work of the cross & repentance from our sin?

Spend a few minutes praying together for the following:

  • Pray that we would take all of our sin, guilt, and shame to the cross where there is forgiveness & victory.

  • Pray that we would more fully realize our union with Christ as we are being transformed from one degree of glory to the next into his image.

  • Pray for the Lord to protect those around the world from the effects of this virus, to sustain healthcare workers and others on the frontlines of care, and for patience and endurance in this prolonged season of being scattered.

CONFESSION OF SIN, COMMUNION, & ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*The Lord’s Supper is a meal instituted by Jesus for his followers to specifically remember his death on our behalf (see Matt. 26:26-28 & 1 Cor. 11: 23-26). Partaking in the bread and the cup together is a reminder of where our hope is rooted, and prepares us for the marriage supper of the Lamb that is to come in the New Heavens & the New Earth. Accordingly, only Christians (and Christians with a clear conscience) should partake in this meal. A confession of sin & assurance of pardon bookend communion below to capture our need for and our response to the death of Jesus.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Leader: Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.

Everyone: Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

COMMUNION

Leader: The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Ephesians 2:1-7)

Leader: And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Everyone: But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace we have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

BENEDICTION

2 Corinthians 13:11
Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord
Everyone: Thanks be to God!
